Agriculture Clubs at Urrbrae Agricultural High School
At Urrbrae Agricultural High School, we pride ourselves on fostering a dynamic learning environment where students have the agency to shape their educational journeys. Our clubs, which are optional and led by student choice, are an example of this. These clubs align seamlessly with both student interests and the agricultural pathways offered by our school, providing a supplementary layer to the agricultural subjects taught in the classroom.
Our clubs are designed to ignite curiosity in our students. By engaging in these clubs, students can dive deeper into specific areas of interest, enhancing their understanding and skills in agriculture. For example, the agricultural clubs not only supports the curriculum but also offers a range of extension activities along with helping to keep the animals in good condition. These activities include weekend and school holiday expos, shows, and industry-specific events that provide students with valuable exposure to real-world agricultural practices and innovations.
A particularly noteworthy aspect of our club structure is the work placements we organise through the robust relationships we have built with industry partners. These placements are an integral part of our students’ education, offering hands-on experience in various agricultural settings. Through these placements, students can apply their classroom knowledge in practical environments, gaining insights and skills that are crucial for their future careers.
Our approach at Urrbrae ensures that students are not just passive recipients of information but active participants in their learning process. By providing a platform for student choice and aligning club activities with both their interests and educational pathways, we empower our learners to take control of their education and prepare them for success in the agricultural industry and so much more.
A hallmark of our club program is the evident student leadership. Older or more experienced students take on mentoring roles, guiding new members and providing valuable advice on the opportunities, activities, and experiences the clubs should focus on. This peer-led structure not only enhances the learning experience but also cultivates leadership skills among our students.
Our clubs benefit immensely from extensive industry support. Donations of equipment and livestock, as well as community mentoring, are instrumental in providing practical, hands-on experiences for our students. Additionally, our old scholars actively contribute their expertise and equipment, facilitating workshops and demonstrations that further enrich the club activities.
This robust network of support and diverse club offerings at Urrbrae AHS underscores our commitment to providing a dynamic and comprehensive educational experience. By integrating a wide range of interests and fostering strong community ties, we ensure that our students are well-equipped for both academic and practical success in their future endeavours.
How do students join a club
At the commencement of each school year;
Year 7 Clubs
Year 7 students are provided a ‘try before you buy’ program in Term 1 which exposes the students to many agricultural club offerings on a weekly rotational lunchtime roster. From Term 2 onwards Year 7 students can then choose the clubs they would like to participate in.
Years 8-12 Clubs
Year 8 – 12 students can nominate for clubs of their choice. The club details are promoted through the school website and the students express their interest using an online link made available to them via the school portal.
